During the reign of King Rajasingha II, the king's elephant broke the chain tied to it and came to the area of this waterfall. Because of this, the king has informed the people that a person who catches an elephant will be given a village boon. Then a person named Wanasinghe who lived in this area caught the elephant and tied it to a root of a ''Bo'' tree. Due to this, ''Bomula village'' has gradually changed over time as ''Bomburu village''. As per the legend, this name was also applied to the waterfall.
